Section III

Concept Development:

Online security and privacy is a broad topic. At first we focused on the Dark Web looking at websites such as the Silk Road, Doxbin and its peers. We were interested in researching how extensive the Dark Web is and its potential to ruin an individual’s anonymity. OWe decided that our original target audience was too ambitious. Originally we intended to aim from toddlers to pensioners but we soon realised that wrestling with an age gap that large would create  a huge amount of unnecessary extra work. We needed to refine our concept and figure out what exactly what we wanted to say and who we wanted to say it to. Although the overall group were on the same thought process we were struggling to articulate our concept coherently. What we wanted was to create an experience where the user would be taken out of one framework and put into another to criticise the former. We discussed subjectivism vs. objectivism. We argued that by creating a framework similar to the digital one that users are used to we could createan environment where they could take a step back and realise the implications of their actions. However, this argument proved paradoxical. Although we wanted to take the user from a subjective framework and put them into an objective one, the objective framework would be designed and eventually biased by us, therefore becoming subjective. Along the same lines of framework vs. framework we developed an idea based on the senses experienced by a user. We argued that through the bombardment of advertisements in the media the average user becomes accustomed to these. While said advertisements become more relevant to the users search queries the user is often unaware of the data-mining that’s involved. We discussed the user’s experience and the steps the user takes when having an online experience. By mapping the experience we decided to introduce a new sense, touch. The average user experience is dominated by audio and visual experiences. We plan to introduce touch via a booklet which will interact and use digital content to explain the message the group is trying to portray.

Individual Roles:

Aidan Kelly

Considering all members of the group are rooted in the same course, we have individual and group wide skill sets. For my role in the group project I will focus largely on layout, content development and user experience design.

The group will be using the Adobe Creative Suite. To develop vector graphics I will use Illustrator. This software easily deals with any vector based media content. It will allow me to create a vector graphic and send it directly to another member of the group for post-production. The programs are compatible with software used by the team. The transition of files should be a minimal hassle ensuring a solid workflow. For format InDesign will be a precious asset. As of yet I have not produced media content via print. I would consider my skill sets to focus largely on digital design, and with this project I hope to learn valuable skill sets and add them to my existing ones. I will use Google Drive and its other suites for its online cloud services. This should allow me to authorise group members to access digital content on my Drive folder while I am on the go. It will also ensure that there is a backup copy kept. Near the end of the project the backup copies will be used to create the “process” shots for our exhibition.

Come post-production Photoshop is the obvious choice.  Photoshop will be ideal for adding any effects and adjustments to the illustrations. While InDesign is fantastic for layout design and Illustrator excels at creating vector imagery Photoshop is the most suited to our post production needs. Since the software is part of the Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator files sent from our illustrator will open directly in Photoshop and InDesign allowing us to work with and save updated versions of the file.

During the development of the project I will focus on the user’s experience. I will be orientating the design of the booklet towards a user experience promoting critical thinking. Throughout the project I will research the reading patterns of our target audiences. This will be important for two reasons. Firstly, by understanding how they read it enables me to design a layout in which the user finds it easier, or more difficult to read. This will be an interesting asset to have. The different ways to present the information to users will have a considerable effect on the user’s experience. Secondly, I will be able to design the content to suit our needs. We can portray the content in various formats depending on the target audience and withhold or grant information in different places. By withholding and granting information in strategic areas, I hope to promote critical thinking among the users

My current skill sets are digitally orientated. I am familiar with web design, IOS application design and others. With this project I hope to dive into the unfamiliar side of print design. Hopefully I can learn a lot from my peers about typography, page setup and preparing for print. At the moment I rely on Photoshop for all my content creation needs, by the end of this project I will be as competent on Illustrator and InDesign as I am on Photoshop.

We plan on using digital conventions through the medium of traditional print.

Aidan Prendeville

My role in the group is to formulate ideas regarding digital systems and apply them to a physical medium. I will be primarily concerned with the delivery of our message. I will apply visual solutions with the purpose of educating the viewer on complex notions about privacy, security and trust in an internet setting.

I will be concerned with the form, function and style of the project. I will be playing the devils’ advocate when discussing the suitability of using certain ideas in the project. I feel it is necessary to question each other as to why we are doing something – because everything that’s included needs to have a purpose and intent. On a technical level I’ll be doing the illustration and storyboards for the graphics and animation. For this I will use a sketchbook to outline concepts then I will scan those images and work on them in adobe Illustrator. I will bring them into Photoshop for post-production on the illustrations. They will then be used in after effects or as static illustrations for the project. I also have Manga studio which I will use in combination with my graphics tablet to create digital illustrations. This will offer me more choice when deciding how to produce this content.

Then the physical content will be replicated on a digital format. I will have to make sure that when their being digitised that they are maintaining integrity, purpose and continuity. This is a group task and will be completed and reviewed by the entire group to see is the message to the viewer being accurately told through both mediums.

Alan Murphy

As all members in the group are all in the same course we have a common knowledge of the skill set we are using for this project however each one of us have different strengths and weaknesses in regards to certain software and we can complement and help each other based on each members strengths and weaknesses.

My individual role that I will take on for this project is the lead designer on the Digital Publication of the project. The main aim of the digital publication part of this project is to is to expand on user interactivity and bring in many different multimedia types into the digital publication such as animations, HTML 5 code and interactive functions such as buttons. While adding in all these extra features we also have to keep consistency with the print publication of the project.

I will build the digital publication using the Adobe InDesign software suite. The reason why I opted for this software is because it is the industry standard for creating digital publications. The other reason why I opted for using this software is due to its close connections with other software programs in the Adobe suite such as Illustrator and After Effects. These two software programs will be used for creating the illustrations that can be found in the print publication and the animations that will be in the digital publication.

The main workflow of creating the digital publication will consist of acquiring the final assets used for the print publication from the other members of the group. Due to the complexity of each illustration, they may contain several layers. I aim to isolate each individual layer in an illustration and save them out as its own separate file. I will then import each file into After Effects and being to animate that particular section of the digital publication.

Along with animations, I am to incorporate various user interactivitys into the digital publication. I use will various functions that the Adobe InDesign suite will offer such as HTML5 code, scrollable frames and multi touch object states.

Along with working on creating the digital publication, I will also give my opinion and designs layout for various sections of the print publication.

Eoin Murphy

As a group we will be collectively involved in all aspects of the overall project, but having identified our strengths and weaknesses we will each focus on an individual aspect based on our strengths.

I will  focus mainly on the visual aspect and the visual communication for this project. We plan on having an interactive print booklet that the user will unfold, un-crumple, tear, pull-out and interact with as they walk through our piece in the exhibition in May. I have a major obsession with typography, so I will take the lead on the typography used in the booklet. I have divided the booklet into 3 sections, each a little more tainted or darker as the booklet goes on, so the choice of typography used in each section will be essential to ensure the correct message is being conveyed in the correct manner.

As well as taking the lead in typography , I will also be in charge of the general visual direction of this project. Since I will be deciding what typography will be used, I will also have a big input into what colours are used making sure to  use colours that contrast well with the type on the page, while also tainting the colour as the user goes through the booklet.

Since our booklet is going to take quite a strange layout and format, I will be in charge of making sure that the layout of the paper prototypes we create is accurately recreated digitally so that the content will be able to put into that document.

Media Content/Media Usage:

The group plan to use multiple mediums to portray the overall concept. The booklet will be coupled with the digital publication. Said application will deliver the digital content to the user and will be formatted in such a manner that the user will receive content depending on their choices. The digital content provided will be a series of animations. The animations will have an obvious narrative reflecting the user’s experience. However, the animations will have a subversive sub-theme as well reflecting on the lack of critical thinking employed by the user when certain decisions are made. We felt that animation wouldbe effective in holding the user’s attention. The targeted age group will need to be held with a steady flow of information and have the data portrayed to them through various tools.

Illustrations will be used throughout the booklet to enforce the narrative. The illustrations will contain double entendre relevant to the age groups. The illustrations will contain a sub-theme as well as continuing the narrative. The group determined that infographics would be the most effective method of displaying statistical data. However, the group is also aware of the danger of representing the data in a dense format, or deviate from the flow of information, that the target audience may lose focus.

Audio will be used in accordance with Eisenstein’s arguments on sound. We hope to lull the user into a false comfortable environment where they will let their guard down. We hope to use counterpoint audio techniques to subliminally shatter the user’s comfort zone and force them to question the content and its environment.

The group plan to create or adapt a visual language and run it throughout the project. With a visual language the group can collectively design and produce so as to coherently link the mediums together. By doing this, the user should not become disillusioned or confused when experiencing the provided content.

We also plan to use video motion graphics throughout t. Compositing the illustrations, animations and visual language through industry standard software will create a focal point in which the content can be produced collectively amongst the group.

Technical Research:

Using industry standard software we will produce and maintain a high standard of work. We plan to use Adobe Illustrator to explore and create the animated characters. Adobe InDesign will be used to design and format the booklet which will be made from a weighted paper. This should facilitate the drop down/fold out experience we are designing for.
